Schaeffer Mfg has a long history of providing field and track performance driven engine
oils to the racing industry. All of these engines oils have contained and still contain a sufficient
amount of ZDDP to protect against premature wear to flat tappet camshafts. The amount of zinc
and phosphorus present in different engine oils used in racing applications can be found in Table
I.

"In addition to a sufficient amount of ZDDP each of these engines oils contain Micron Moly®,
a
liquid soluble organomolybdenum type of Moly and Schaeffer Mfg’s own proprietary additive
Penetro®. These two proven frictional modifiers once plated to the metal surfaces of the engine
form a long lasting slippery tenacious lubricant film, which prevents the metal surfaces from
coming into contact with each other. By preventing metal-to-metal contact, damaging frictional
wear is prevented from occurring, especially in heavily loaded valve-trains that employ flat
tappet camshafts.
The use of both a liquid soluble type of moly and Penetro is particularly well suited for use in
racing engine applications where adverse conditions such as high pressures, high shock loads,
high speeds and long duration races cause the engine oil’s lubricant film to break down and
prevent metal-to-metal contact. Temperature and pressure between the mating metal surfaces
causes the Moly and Penetro to form a thin solid lubricant film that is physically attracted to the
metal’s surface. This film consists of a plate-like structure containing layers of molybdenum
atoms and the Penetro sandwiched between layers of sulfur atoms. Between each adjacent layer
of sulfur atoms are weak bonds that allow each plate to slide easily over one another resulting in
a low coefficient of friction. Within each layer between the Sulfur-Molybdenum-Penetro-Sulfur
are strong bonds that help prevent the metal surfaces from contacting each other. In fact
research done by General Motors, Ford and the Imperial College of London found that the
type of Soluble Moly Compound used in Schaeffer Mfg’s engine oils form very small
crystals of Molybdenum Disulfide as they come into contact with the rubbing metal
surfaces that are 0.00000001 to 0.000000025 microns in diameter and 0.000000001 to
0.000000002 microns thick. This Moly film will withstand pressures up to 500,000 psi and fills
in and evens out the microscopic pits and valleys present in the metal surfaces of the engine. The type of soluble Moly that is used has a coefficient of friction is between0.04 to 0.08 and in
research done in the late 1980’s and early to mid 1990’s by Chevron-Texaco and in Japan it was found that an engine’s coefficient of friction can be reduced up to 80% by using
organomolybdenum soluble compounds. In addition to these aspects it has been found that
organomolybdenum soluble compounds not only enhance ZDDP’s anti-wear and friction
reducing capabilities but also function as an antioxidant that will enhance the engine oil’s
resistance to high temperature oxidation and oxidative viscosity thickening."
